Post by SethRich »

Greetings,

This is an absolute disgrace.

Click through to Twitter via the blue bird for more information on this atrocious practice and the impacts it is having on marine wildlife and the Iranian people.

The Electric Pulse Fishing article at wikipedia says that "this method of fishing has a less disastrous impact on the seabed ecosystem" and "It ..... requires significantly less fuel, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions".

Overfishing is still overfishing regardless of the method used.....it is likely that there is overfishing being done but there is no proof offered.

Overfishing is well-documented. Here is a summary, but there are numerous studies and articles about it.

It's not only depleting fish species, but also upsetting entire marine ecosystems.

Locals in China and throughout Asian coastal waters are all using electrofishing. Obviously no killing aspect of Dharma has little if any effect on appetites:

Dhamma is against the stream of common thought, deep, subtle, difficult, delicate, unseen by passion’s slaves cloaked in the murk of ignorance. Vipassī Buddha

This kind of electrofishing is used around where I live in thailand and I have seen it done many times. You first pump most of the water out of the pond and then when the water is low enough the fisher walks in the mud and shallow water and does pretty much like in the video. The fish and eels here are much bigger than what is shown in the video.

To make an electrofishing rig you use a motorcycle battery and an electric fence powering unit which typically can be run on line electricity or battery.....then all you need is an on/off switch, some wire, and the poles. A very simple apparatus and quite effective.
