Socially aware music

Post by SethRich »

Greetings,

This is a topic to share "socially aware" music.

Rather than just drop a Youtube link, please try to give us a brief overview of the social issues being addressed in the song.

Metta,
:candle:
"He goes to hell, the one who asserts what didn’t take place" (Ud 4.8)
"Let us neither be perpetrators nor victims!" (DN26)

"Transition to greatness" (Donald J. Trump)

Greetings,

Here's a couple of tracks from the late 80's / early 90's by a band called Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine.

This is "Sheriff Fatman"... it's about heartless, profiteering slumlords and the misery that their scroogery creates.

This is "Bloodsport For All"... it's about the culture of abuse that can exist within the army.

I have believed for a long time that serious issues can be aired very effectively in non-serious ways and I have just heard an excellent example - performed live by the songwriter, which was a real bonus. :thumb:
We got the audience participation stuff. You can have the animation instead.

The message is still relevant 44 years later... Frank Zappa's spoof of spiritual quackery...

The Mystery Man came over
And he said: "I'm outa sight!"
He said, for a nominal service charge
I could reach Nirvana tonight
...
Look here, brother, who you jiving with that cosmik debris?

Good wishes to you Frank, wherever you are!

For tree-huggers...

Rudyard Kipling’s A Tree Song, sung by Peter Bellamy.

.

.
A Tree Song

OF all the trees that grow so fair,
Old England to adorn,
Greater are none beneath the Sun,
Than Oak, and Ash, and Thorn.
Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn, good sirs,
(All of a Midsummer morn!)
Surely we sing no little thing,
In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

Oak of the Clay lived many a day,
Or ever Æneas began.
Ash of the Loam was a lady at home,
When Brut was an outlaw man.
Thorn of the Down saw New Troy Town
(From which was London born);
Witness hereby the ancientry
Of Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

Yew that is old in churchyard-mould,
He breedeth a mighty bow.
Alder for shoes do wise men choose,
And beech for cups also.
But when ye have killed, and your bowl is spilled,
And your shoes are clean outworn,
Back ye must speed for all that ye need,
To Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

Ellum she hateth mankind, and waiteth
Till every gust be laid,
To drop a limb on the head of him
That anyway trusts her shade:
But whether a lad be sober or sad,
Or mellow with ale from the horn,
He will take no wrong when he lieth along
'Neath Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

Oh, do not tell the Priest our plight,
Or he would call it a sin;
But we have been out in the woods all night,
A-conjuring Summer in!
And we bring you news by word of mouth –
Good news for cattle and corn –
Now is the Sun come up from the South,
With Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn, good sirs
(All of a Midsummer morn):
England shall bide till Judgment Tide,
By Oak, and Ash, and Thorn!

What Local People? — Examining the Gállok mining conflict and the rights of the Sámi population in terms of justice and power

The title of the second article is derived from a poetical harangue by Maxida's sister, Mimi.

Is anyone here either a fan of, or curious about, socially aware punk rock?

I loved it 40 years ago. ("God shave the Queen - and the British regime!" :thumb: ) But now my musical taste changed very much.
